Bread and blood.

She used to sit right next to me
playing in the grass
even in class
back then in 2nd grade
when everything would fade
but our innocent smiles

when i was sick
she used to visit
helping with all missing lessons
when she wasn't around
i would stop by her house
and ask if everything is alright

those streets,
carved with our little steps
show
those playgrounds,
that used to hold our little dreams
know
our little secrets,
we only whispered to the wind
Me and my best friend

At Christmas we both decorated one tree
blew some candles in birthday cakes
in Ramadan she used to fast with me
I used to love these cookies her mother bakes
For me in Eid
Love was our creed
Me and my best friend

She prayed with me in my mosque
I lit one candle in her church
Her heart is all i saw of her
she only knew this human in me
we would never bend
Me and my best friend

Her first day of everything
we were together
when happy or sad
i was all she had
and she was all i need
why this greed?
why is it difficult for love to lead?
why should they plant the doubts
in the eyes that only knew love

I never saw that cross in her necklace
and she never noticed the Gilded verse
around mine
i only saw in her my best friend
and she always believed by her side i stand
Together we weaved
Our Childhood memories
just as Pure

So,you may blast all the churches you need
destroy all mosques and plead
for mercy
such hypocrisy!
yet, you can never touch that bond
of bread and blood
My best friend and I
still eat from the same plate.

Loved the underlying message behind this work... clear and pristine love that comes with childhood friendship... and yes, Egypt's secular credentials too.

Absolutely beautiful! (Not what I expected...you've got me conditioned to all that breathtaking sensuality...LOL. Nice change of pace!)

Sometimes our differences make our bonds even stronger. I wish I'd had such a friend whilst growing up. Lovely piece.

A New Years message that needs to be repeated as often as it can be read or said. Thanks for bringing this to the table.

"Her first day of everything
we were together.." that so expresses that close bond that ignores the artificial divisions your whole poem is about. Really, a poignant and bittersweet piece. Enjoyed the music very much also.

This is really powerful and it is a thought so desperately needed in this world. Bravo.

In every thought we share, in every word we write, in every gesture we make to let the world know that if a human heart is filled with love and wishes peace, we can and will change it. Nighthawk's poem today has the same message said in a different way. Each of us here is resisting this prejudice thaat pulls us apart.

I loved this beautiful and innocent piece and wish you the peace that surpasses understanding.

This is a very moving poem. I was kind of caught off guard in the line that called her "best friend." That title is unneeded because you've already shown us your friendship.

I love this poem and the message it sends; the fact that it’s real presents a far greater impact. Assalaamu alaikum rahmatullahi wa barakatu.

Truth lies at these deepest levels. Very beautiful.

sounds like a great friend..and the two of you now become the face for your message and i think that is a brave and beautiful thing...

Just beautiful...I, too, had a best friend as a child who was from a totally different religious background...and it made not a whit of difference.

We could learn so much from the open hearts of children...

Beautifully written. Beliefs matter not with true friendship nor should they prevent friendships from happening. Underneath it all we are human with similar feelings, needs and desires. If only your poem could lead our world, we may have a better one in which to raise our children.

This is simply beautiful. You brought back memories to me of my best friend as a child, one with whom I've lost touch. A sad thing.

What a wonderful testament to friendship, religious tolerance and coexistence. If everyone were as understanding, patient and caring as this, the world would be a much better place for all!

Your poem moved me. I am so happy to have read it!

Love and friendship and the bonds of humanity...we need look no further than children to see them. It is true, they can be cruel, but they do not see the same things society has long-ingrained into the rest of us. Excellently played here. It's a shot at the status quo, the image so often played up. Christian and Muslim, especially with how the world and the news seems to view the two across from one another, make for an excellent way to prod at the religious structure, and truly all the things we build between one another, segregate ourselves with, divide...

Potent piece. Well-executed!

The connection, so basic, so human, so beyond social boundaries. It brought tears with it. Thank you.

Beautiful, thissss, "sisterhood" of best friends, and so well depicted the strength in emotions that unify persons in heart/ despite beliefs being a slight bit different but shared with each other with the same bond, loving, something this world so much more needs to do! Excellent!

Kavita said...

This was just supremely beautiful, Desert Rose!!! No claw of religion or hatred can ever touch the pure minded!
I wish the world imbibes the lovely thought in this poem, and puts an end to the misery rising out of sheer nonsense!

A very happy and peaceful new year to you, my dear..

The power of love is amazing, transcending race, gender, religion...it is the unifying existence of man. Your words have touched me more than you know.

I as a teacher see many such bonds in my classroom(s). And that gladdens my heart. And reminds me of my bonding, which still last, since my school days.

Religion does not mater, only love matters...

Wonderful writing.

such a beautiful message, dear lady, and so beautifully delivered to us - a story to be shared for sure! i loved it! and what a world we would have if only we each could see the sameness of us all and not the differences - because, as you know, we truly are - all the same!

Political - and soooo necessary right now - without speechifying. Life and provocation in verse and tale, excellent.

John Lennon would have been proud of you. There are only two things that this world needs.. Love and Respect.

But the world is being corrupted by lust and greed. This is one way of spreading the love and the only way to defeat hatred. Continue writing and someday even roses will bloom on a desert.

Whatever they do to destroy the peace, would just not help... we know our friends and we all still share that one bond!!!
nice and strong words... meaningfully put :D

A great and inspiring message for everyone today! We have lost the capability to see the love in everyone. Instead of treasuring such values today people are only creating walls of hatred everywhere!
